Hardin Farm Marge Hardin donated a conservation easement to NLI on her 272-acre farm in Ustick Township in Whiteside County near Morrison, Illinois. The easement assures that the historic Durward-Hardin farm will be protected and soil and water conservation practices continued. About 60 acres are enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program and are planted with native prairie species. Horseshoe Mound Horseshoe Mound, located less than a mile east of downtown Galena, was identified in the early 1970s as one of the most significant natural areas in Illinois by the Illinois Natural Areas Inventory, an outstanding example of a driftless area mound. Patricia Richardson’s donation of a conservation easement to NLI assures that 28 acres of the Horseshoe Mound will remain undeveloped. Great Mississippi River Ridge Algific slopes near the base of several large limestone outcrops within the Great Mississippi Ridge easement area are protected by a 140-acre conservation easement granted to NLI by owners of the Ridge development. The easement protects the rare algific slopes, forestland, natural sinkholes and ravines, home to a host of species that exist only in boreal regions far north of Illinois borders. |
