Winter Tree & Shrub ID Workshop

Ever wonder how to tell one tree apart from another in the cold stillness of winter with no leaves or fruit? Come to the Winter Tree & Shrub ID Workshop, co-presented by Natural Land Institute (NLI) and The Land Conservancy of McHenry County (TLC), that will be held on Sat., Feb. 5, 2022 at Severson Dells Nature Center (8786 Montague Rd., Rockford, IL 61102) to find out. Registration is available for 20 people.
Zach Grycan, NLI’s Director of Stewardship, and Megan Oropeza, TLC’s Restoration Ecologist, will lead this workshop, which will be partially indoors and partially outdoors. You will observe and discuss the characteristics of trees and shrubs commonly found in our region using bark, twigs, and buds, as well as some other features. Walk away with an understanding of what to look for when the rivers freeze and summer ends!

Indoor Classroom Instruction: 9:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m.
LUNCH: 12:00 p.m.—1:00 p.m. (On Your Own, Brown Bag Recommended)
Outdoor Instruction and Walk: 1:00 p.m.—3:00 p.m.
COST: $20 PER PERSON – Includes reference sheets to keep. Dress for the weather.
