Prescribed Burns Help Manage Land

Learn How at this Workshop

NLI Director of Stewardship, Zach Grycan, and Melissa Grycan of The Land Conservancy of McHenry County, will lead a Prescribed Burn Training Workshop, on Sunday, March 25, 2018, 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. for anyone interested in learning how to manage their own land, land conservation professionals, and for those who volunteer for NLI or other conservation organizations’ land stewardship activities. Fire is one of many tools used in managing natural areas and can help with restoring, reclaiming, enhancing or re-creating the plant communities in natural habitats. Learn how to conduct a prescribed burn and tips on best practices from Zach, a Certified Prescribed Burn Manager and Melissa, with many years of experience conducting prescribed burns. The workshop will be based on Chicago Wilderness’ Midwest Ecological Prescription Burn Crew Member Training Manual.

An indoor instruction session will take place 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at NLI’s Nygren Wetland Preserve, 3190 W. Rockton Rd., Rockton, Ill. Topics that will be covered are fire behavior and suppression; effective use of hand and power tools; effective use of water to aid fire suppression; conducting a prescribed burn; ecological effects of fire. A lunch break is 12:30-1:30. Weather permitting, the workshop attendees will reconvene at Nygren Wetland to conduct a prescribed burn at 1:30 p.m.
